Athenæum Fall Series: Experiencing Panama through the Peace Corps

November 19, 2009 by kentlib

Jacob McCleland served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the small nation of Panama from 2002 to 2005. He lived and worked in a small village of about 350 people situated in the rugged foothills of western Panama. As an agriculture volunteer, McCleland worked with subsistence farmers to teach a few slightly modified approaches to their traditional methods of farming in order to improve yields and nutrition. In this presentation, McCleland will discuss his work as a Peace Corps volunteer and how the region’s environmental problems affect the village. McCleland graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 2000 with degrees in Anthropology and Spanish. He is currently a host and producer at KRCU, Southeast Missouri State University’s NPR affiliate.

Kent Library’s Fall 2009 Athenæum Series: Do Human Races Exist?

November 12, 2009 by kentlib

People all over the world see themselves as members of subgroups- sometimes as small as a tribe or family, other times as large as a continental “race”. The U.S. Census Bureau counts individuals as members of one of four races (or “other”). Yet many geneticists argue that humans cannot be divided into such categories based on their DNA. On the other hand, some techniques have been devised recently to use DNA testing to discern the geographic origin of people’s ancestors. On Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in Kent Library’s Sadie’s Place Dr. Gathman will discuss recent research on human genetic variation and whether the idea of “race” has any scientific meaning. The presentation is open to all, and refreshments will be served. For more information, please go to: http://library.semo.edu/info/athenaeum.shtml .

Kent Library’s Fall 2009 Athenæum Series: The Environment: Does God Really Care? Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 Noon Kent Library’s Sadie’s Place

October 29, 2009 by kentlib

Does God really care about the environment?  Genesis 2:15 says “And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and guard and keep it.”  Has that command from God changed?  From pollution, global warming, animal extinction, hybrid cars, and nuclear power does any of it really matter to God? Are people who worship God supposed to care about recycling, littering, or going green?  Does the Bible give guidance on our responsibilities towards the earth?  Brett Cheek, M.Div., College Pastor for Ignite and Dr. Kerry Wynn,  Dept. of Political Science, Philosophy, and Religion, from the Association of Campus Ministries will delve into this timely area of concern in today’s society.  Come and join us for a time of teaching and dialogue about the environment as expressed in scripture. This presentation is open to all and refreshments will be served.
