Wednesday, Feb. 10, 12:30 p.m. Sadie’s Place, Kent Library.
Classical music is changing along with the rest of culture. It has been forced to come to terms with developments in technology, growing multiculturalism, and changes in society and the economy. Composers Dr. Robert Fruehwald and flutist Mr. Paul Thompson will discuss and demonstrate these developments using examples from Fruehwald’s own works. The presentation will include the live performance of music for flute, piano and video including excerpts from Hymntunes I (solo flute), Hymntunes III (video), Turkish Preludes (solo flute), Irish Fantasies (bass flute), and Sonata Mozartiana (flute and piano). Refreshments will be served.

Athenæum Spring Series: speaking while listening
January 28, 2010 by kentlibOn Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at 12:30 pm, Kent Library will be proud to begin the Athenaeum offerings for the spring semester by hosting the presentation, “speaking while listening,” by Chris Wubbena, Southeast MO State University professor of sculpture. The current sculpture project involves expressing, through sculptural installation, the experience of a Vietnam veteran’s return to a former war zone. The veteran, Ed Wubbena, Chris’ father, has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder which has had a lasting effect on his life and the people around him. The project is an attempt to learn not what Vietnam was then but what it can be now. Wubbena will discuss the recent trip to Vietnam with his father and the resulting artwork as it begins to take shape.
The event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Kent Library’s director’s office at 573-651-2235.
